Meditation Training | A Meditation Practice of Compassion for self and others
Tonglen is considered one of the most
favorite forms of meditation. Meditation is used as a way of self-development
to gain control over one's behaviors. It also has therapeutic applications as
meditation is said to build focus and creativity. People who are familiar with
it will know that tonglen is a compassion MeditationTraining. The practice of Tonglen, also known as “receiving and giving,”
reverses human logical thinking of avoiding suffering and seeking pleasure. In
tonglen practice, one is said to visualize taking in the pain and suffering of
others with every breath taken in and sending out whatever will benefit them
while breathing out. In the process, people who practice tonglen become
liberated from old patterns of human selfishness. In this way, the deep
connection and love for others is felt beyond love for one’s self.
Having compassion for others is a way
to experience unity, oneness, and a sense of belonging. When you experience oneness,
you feel peaceful because the guilt of ego and pride is deleted. This is the
place of unending potential and the source of creativity. This state is also
the most fertile ground on which one can be said to achieve the undoable. However, a majority of people are reluctant assimilating
eastern practices with western cultures. The idea of consciously facing
pain and suffering makes many to be fearful and dreadful. These feelings come
about because the practice of Tonglen itself is deeply misunderstood by the
masses.
Healing of body and mind are
accomplished by accepting and acknowledging the negative and then reframing it
into the positive outcome desired in a deep state. In other words, you
acknowledge two opposites with equal strength and thus create a neutral
position. Come to think of it, the
universe itself always seeks balance because from this state it renews itself
and evolves. This principle naturally, is also true for humans, since we
are an expression of the universe and our existence is guided by the laws of nature.
We are constantly changing and evolving, and if we learn to allow the process this
can happen so easily. Unfortunately, we have been accustomed to operate against,
rather than with the laws of nature.
Going with the flow means working
with the universal laws. It can feel strange, unreal and illogical, hence we
don't do it. But this is only so because we have had, until now, a very
limited, thus false view of how the world operates. As a result, we create
impediments for ourselves, which we experience as delays in meeting our goals,
and this can cause us much suffering. In order to evolve and connect with the world
free from interference, (our pessimistic and limiting conditionings), our minds
need to become more active and creative. When you learn to be mentally agile,
you also go with the flow automatically and let change take place with very
little to no resistance.
